UN War Planes Bombard ADF Rebel Strongholds in Death Triangle

The Congolese armed forces supported by the MONUSCO intervention brigade have this morning bombed positions of the Ugandan ADF rebels operating in the neighboring DR Congo.

The death triangle is located in Eringeti-Kamango-Mbau in Beni North Kivu.

Residents say this morning heavy aerial gun fire could be heard from the Mayangose area where Monusco planes are bombarding rebel strongholds.

“” This is a joint operation, a FARDC operation supported by MONUSCO. Following last week’s visit by the heads of the WHO and peacekeeping operations, the ongoing operation is the evidence of the expressed willingness to do more to combat the armed groups and secure the area. “, said to Florence Marchal spokesperson of Monusco.

This offensive, she adds, should also “enable an effective response to the Ebola outbreak” in Beni, where the epidemic declared since August 1, has already killed 209 people.

Visiting Beni last week, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, said peacekeepers have started an “active defense” strategy in and around Beni.

The Ugandan ADF rebels who have been in Congo since 1995 are accused of a series of massacres of several hundred civilians since October 2014 in the region of Beni.

Authorities said the rebels have moved closer to the city of Beni after the “dismantling” of their positions deep into the dense forest of Virunga Park.
