President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has grilled top police officers on allegations of some officers harassing Chinese investors by forging criminal charges against them with the aim of extorting money from them.
This was in a meeting last week that was attended all police chiefs from officers in charge of stations in Kampala to Directors of different directorates of Uganda police force.
According to our source who attended the meeting, the furious Museveni warned these senior police commanders follow up the cases and stop harassment of investors especially the Chinese whom he said that it’s them who bring money into the country which pays their salaries and welfare.
“I will sacrifice one of the police officers if you don’t stop harassing my investors,” our source quoted the head of state as warning police bosses.
The President’s sound warning came after getting intelligence reports and different complaints from the Chinese community that police officers forge charges against them and go directly to their shops and arrest them.
They are put on pressure to either pay money or be detained and charged in courts of law and sent to Luzira.
He warned them from further detaining them and said that if police receives a complaint against them, they should summon them to police stations, record their statements and give them police bonds.
The director criminal investigation AIGP Grace Akullo has since summoned all CID chiefs and too warned them to stop arresting Chinese.
Akullo also warned that she will chase whoever is implicated in extortion and arresting investors on fake charges.
